Hope for the future

Following the successful launch of the downtown project at 278 Wilson Street back in early 2018, Ward 3 Councillor Matthew Green (now Member of Parliament for Hamilton-Center) moved to sell another piece of surplus City land to the Hamilton Community Land Trust.

With affordability becoming an issue across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, the intent was to replicate the model used to develop affordable housing downtown. Council passed Councillor Green’s motion in August 2018, and since then, our volunteers have been conducting due diligence in preparation to acquire the land.

Like everyone else, Covid-19 has put a pause on many of our activities. But with summer coming and Ontario re-opening, we are optimistic we will be able to advance land acquisition this year. Over the coming weeks, we’ll introduce you to the site, and our next steps. Come back soon!

The HCLT is a non-profit corporation that owns land in the name of citizens and leases it back to social-purpose organizations and individuals in order to help meet needs that are prioritized by the community.
